About SD Streets for People
“Streets for People” is a new event that is coming to San Diego. It is currently in the planning stages, and we need your help and support.
It will be a activity-based street fair or “Ciclovia.” The concept of the ciclovia grew out of Bogota Colombia where every Sunday they open hundreds of kilometers of city streets to people creating temporary linear parks. In many Latin American cities this is a weekly event and it has been spreading across North America, from New York with “Summer Streets” to San Fransisco with “Sunday Streets.” Even Los Angeles, the car capital of the world is closing it’s streets to cars for it’s own “CicLAvia.”
Streets for People will help promote health and exercise by creating recreational opportunities, promote community cohesion by connecting diverse neighborhoods, and support local business by creating pedestrian and cycling street traffic. It is a cost effective solution for creating recreational space in the urban environment, because it uses the existing infrastructure.
